Who I am, what I do & why

voice - body - rite

Hi, I'm Sergio Beercock: as a multidisciplinary performer, I am a singer, musician, author, and theater actor.

My performances are in fact multidisciplinary, multi-lingual and multi-platform, involving every form of art from video-art to music albums through experimental theatre, with a special eye for live electronic music and ritualistic chanting and body-percussion.

And here follows a brief history of how I got there!

- - -

I was born in UK and brought up in Sicily by a multicultural family. I never identified as English or Sicilian. Coming from the Isles of North and South at the opposite sides of Europe, I like to think of myself as a Gothic Mediterranean ("Beercock" is actually my real surname, but that's another story).

I released my first solo album "Wollow" (2017, 800A Records) as a musician, which I promoted during two years of touring in Italy and the United Kingdom, performing on radio, in clubs, theaters, and festivals.

Since 2015, my music research has been broadening from an initial fascination for extreme music towards traditional world music (Nothern-European, South-American, Mediterranean and Sub-Saharian), techno and IDM, and this led me to collaborate with artists and producers such as:

  • Giovanni Sollima, rearranging together with Andrea Cavuoto some of my original songs for an orchestra of 100 cellos at Teatro di Verdura in Palermo (IT)

  • Fabio Rizzo, with which I have engaged my research in independent discography

  •  Go-Dratta, which has been my first mentor and artistic-partner to initiate me to electronic music

As a performer, I studied under Italian and European maîtres such as Mimmo Cuticchio (puppets and Sicilian traditional storytelling), Francesco Agnello (stage-music in modern theatre), Eugenio Barba and the Odin Teatret (theatre anthropology), Tino Caspanello (playwriting), Bruno Tognolini (poetry for childhood) and several others.

I also work in various theatrical groups, as a director, author and composer. My stage music and performances have debuted at festivals such as Santarcangelo, Romaeuropa, Nouvelle Génération Lyon, Teatro Biondo Palermo, Fondazione Merz, Primavera dei Teatri, and the Cannes Film Festival, and I was a finalist for the Premio Scenario Infanzia. Most of my theatre work and stage-music involve the co-creation with actors and performers themselves, towards a common dramaturgy and original sound.

I released a second album, "Human Rites," in December 2020, under the concept of "Voice. Body. Rite." which was included by Rumore Magazine among the best European albums of the year. The whole album was conceived as an in-studio performance, using  almost only my voice and my body to produce beats, melodies and harmonies.

This album defined my new vision of performing arts: I do not separate music, performance, poetry and theatre anymore.  From Human Rites onwards, my research has crossed and met the visions of artists and people from all over the world, of different philosophies, religions, crafts, disciplines and social environments.

Together with the performers of the "Progetto Amunì" multicultural theatre group, for example, I released my new single "OIDA" (2022, 800A Records).

In 2021, Bisso Edizioni published a poetic and theoretical anthology about my research titled "voce corpo rito" ("voice body rite").

Currently, I live in Rome and collaborate with numerous Italian and European multidisciplinary artists and organizations in theater and performative poetry, such as Babel Crew (Palermo), Progetto Amunì (Palermo), Giuliano Logos (Roma), Mauro Lamantia (Roma), Teatrialchemici (Palermo), and A.I.R.C.A.C. (Paris).
